John Mayer @ the Enmore Theatre

I can’t tell you how amazing John Mayer was … so I won’t … cause I can’t. After watching him switch between 8 different strats on stage, I have got strat-fever bad. Such a great show. I got my groove on.

This year’s Inaburra Golf Day was a special occasion. The three D’s and I were back and better than ever!

Richard, Darren, Derek and Paul - Inaburra Golf Day 2006

Here is the Hanna Newman Associates sponsored hole. This is my Dad’s business. Really happy with this shot – each ‘D’ really brought a lot to it and didn’t hold back. Bare, delicate, gentle.

Special congratulations to Derek for finishing his Masters of Theology earlier that morning.

if only I was cooler

Even though I like to think I have a vast taste when it comes to music, who I am kidding? I like what I like, and if I think something sucks then I say it. Nobody likes to think they are close-minded!

But, sometimes, there is music I wish I liked so that I was cooler. Music that all the cool people listen to and love, music that radio stations love, but I hate – I just can’t get into them. I try! I wish I liked them! But, no.

death from above 1979 Architecture in Helsinki The Presets

Death from Above 1979 are these two guys that are just drum and bass. They layer their instruments with tonnes of effects to fill out the sound. Yeah, they do some cool stuff but I just can’t listen to it.

Architecture in Helsinki – apart from having a cool name and an amazing website I couldn’t stand these guys. Every time they came on the radio I went back to WSFM or put in a CD. But the radio loves them! I don’t.

The Presets. I can see a pattern with the bands I don’t like – duos: one on drums another on … whatever. I don’t like many of them. The Presets are a band that fall into this category. Again (!) people love them and I am uncool.

So if you are at a party and you are in a situation like me, you’ve got two choices if you want to stay cool:

1. As soon as the songs starts say “oh yes! [insert fad band here]! I love this band!” The earlier the better with this one. If you recognise the band two beats into the songs and get that in, then people will think you are a die hard fan. Way cool. Don’t hesitate. If you hesitate, go to option number ‘2’.

2. This one can backfire so I would use it in conjunction with a ‘walk away’. If the songs/band starts and you want to establish coolness (and you choose not option 1 or hesitate), say “Ah! I am over this band. So commercial. Their earlier stuff is cool, but I am over this album.” .
The ‘walk away’ is crucial. Why? The band might not have earlier work. If you get stuck trying to make up stuff about “yeah, I have an early EP of theirs …” and all that, then you can do yourself a massive mischief. Don’t risk it. Option 2 + walk away.

disclaimer: if you like these bands then I am not having a dig at you. More power to you. All I am saying is, I wish I was cooler.
